The history of the study of microbiology is explored in detail. What is implied (and sometimes said outright) is that biologists have neglected studying it. The book is mostly a long series of interesting investigations into the microbiomes of humans and animals. This is the community of micro-organisms (although it's almost all focused on bacteria with a small amount of emphasis on viruses) that live around us, on us, and inside us. The subject of this book is the microbiome. I don't know if this is reflective of my loss of naivete, or increase in biological knowledge. Now I return to it as an older man, and find it has lost a lot of its shine. I have read this book once before, just before I went to university, and I found it immensely enlightening at the time. 5/28/2023 0 Comments Trust by Pete ButtigiegHe won the Democratic presidential caucuses in Iowa in 2020 but, perhaps more importantly, knew when it was time to step aside so the party could unite around Biden. He speaks eight languages, had spells at Harvard, Oxford and McKinsey, became a mayor before he turned 30 and did military service in Afghanistan. The meteoric rise helps explain why Buttigieg is widely seen as potential presidential material in 2024, 2028 or beyond. The scope ranges from commercial space travel to the oversight of our Merchant Marine Academy, so not just planes, trains and automobiles, but everything in between. “But here you work with a daunting scope and scale. “As mayor, of course, I worked on a broad range of issues – anything that happened in the city was my concern,” he recalls in a pre-Christmas interview with the Guardian in Washington. Buttigieg has gone from running a city of 100,000 people to a department whose budget is bigger than the gross domestic product of most countries. 5/28/2023 0 Comments Lang leav poemsiaWalking across a log in the forest, Olympic National Fores… | Flickr Lesson 3: Prioritize what truly matters As young people, we are overwhelmed by the complexities of modern life, embracing simplicity can provide a sense of peace and tranquility, reducing anxiety and stress. This verse suggests that there is beauty and value in simplicity. Lesson 2: Recognize the Beauty and Value in SimplicityIn Matthew 6:28-29, Jesus draws attention to the simplicity of nature, highlighting how the lilies of the field grow without worrying. Students can benefit from practicing mindfulness and concentrating on the here and now, which can reduce anxiety and improve mental well-being. Each day has enough trouble of its own." This verse encourages us to stay present and avoid getting caught up in future concerns. Lesson 1: Focus on the Present Matthew 6:34 reads, " Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Tocqueville (1862) states that “epochs sometimes occur in the life of a nation when the old customs of a person are changed, public morality is destroyed, religious belief shaken, and the spell of tradition broken” (Tocqueville 19). As a matter of fact, the author discusses social problems, injustices, and discrimination in the face of the American democratic system. This literature is vital in understanding the history of America and how the political system operates on the facets of foreign policy evaluation and modifying democracy in order to maintain relevance in line with the American dream. Critical Summary of “Democracy in America” Besides, the paper is specifically on the quantifiable elements as discusses and presents explanation at the macro level. Thus, this reflective treatise attempts to explicitly review various thoughts expressed in this book. The book, “ Democracy in America” by Alexis de Tocqueville defines the thoughts of the author on various aspects of America from the angles of social, political, security, and the need for appreciation of diversity especially among the Anglo-Americans. 5/28/2023 0 Comments Oliver sacks l dopaMelbourne, Victoria, Bolinda/Audible audio, 2016Ĭapture and storage technique digital storage Carrier category online resource Carrier category codeĬarrier MARC source rdacarrier.Label Awakenings, Oliver Sacks Link Instantiates Language eng Summary Rendered catatonic by the sleeping-sickness epidemic that swept the world just after the First World War, all twenty had spent forty years in hospital: motionless and speechless aware of the world around them, but exhibiting no interest in it - until Dr Sacks administered the then-new drug, L-DOPA, which caused them, temporarily, to awake from their decades-long slumber Accompanying matter technical information on music Cataloging source AU-TuBDP 1933-2015 Sacks, Oliver Form of composition not applicable Format of music not applicable Intended audience Adult Music parts not applicable PerformerNote Read by the author Davis, Jonathan Series statement Borrowbox Label Awakenings Title Awakenings Statement of responsibility Oliver Sacks Creator 5/28/2023 0 Comments Wonder woman the hiketeiaBy presenting the work as a tragedy, Rucka meant to reveal Wonder Woman's more ineffectual - given the untenable situation - and somber sides. Ĭompared to his later work, The Hiketeia offered a very limited presentation of Wonder Woman, focusing on what Rucka himself considered only one facet of the character. Even as one of his favorite characters, Rucka made a point that getting inside Wonder Woman's head was "murderous", so for the graphic novel, he decided not to let it be about Wonder Woman, but rather about how she was perceived, a method he continued to employ in his run on the ongoing series. 2), with #195 in 2003, Greg Rucka started his work on the character a year before that in the one-shot Wonder Woman: The Hiketeia. In a college club largely composed of men, the leader is planning a Valentine’s day themed dance on the Sunday before Valentine’s day. We are treated to his dodgy beginnings, another godly sexual assault. Then there is the other half of this tale, Perseus. Image from Mythopedia – Head of Medusa by Peter Paul Rubens – 1618 Any living creature she looks at will be lithified. Uses her goddess powers to turn Medusa’s hair to snakes and her eyes to weapons of mass destruction. So, Athena seeks revenge on Poseidon by assaulting Medusa, figuring, we guess, that this might make Poseidon sad, or something. But that he raped Medusa in Athena’s temple! Desecration! Well, that cannot go unpunished. I mean a god’s gotta do what a god’s gotta do. After being sexually assaulted by Poseidon in one of Athena’s temples, the goddess was appalled. We learn how Medusa came by her notable do. She needed to devote a full book to this outrage in order to get any peace. If the feeling remained that powerful for so long, it was a message. But the story stayed with her, well, the rage about the story of how ill-treated this supposed monster had been, anyway. In nine-thousand words she offered a non-standard view of the story of heroic Perseus slaying the gorgon. When Natalie Haynes wrote Pandora’s Jar, a collection of ten essays on the women in Greek myths, she included a chapter on Medusa. He is a vicious little thug and the sooner you grasp that, and stop thinking of him as a brave boy hero, the closer you’ll be to understanding what actually happened. Perseus…has no interest in the well being of any creature if it impedes his desire to do whatever he wants. |
